The way I think....
I did a recent blog about why I have returned to film photography for personal work (although I still use my digital a lot, but each medium has it’s place in my business/life/heart). I do still get quite a few inquiries about why I would do this, what is the draw for me!
I thought it might be fun to do a short blog with some of the images from my rolls, and what compelled me to advance the film and fire that shutter for each one! As I mentioned before, when it costs you $$ every time you take a shot, it really helps me to THINK more and really have a clear reason why I want to shoot. It could be a simple as it looks pretty, or it could have a deeper meaning! I will share a little of each!
One of the reasons I got into photography at all, was to be able to capture real life moments that my friends and I, and subsequently my family and I experienced. This was one that warranted a capture. Chris on a rare day when he gets to work from home and not on road, with his trusty side kick nestled into his bed.
From babies to young adults, capturing moments of my kids doing things, or just being….has always been a priority. This passion of mine for photographing my family was where the name “never too many” for my blog originated.
Outside my best friend’s gym that I manage and coach/train at, and I patiently sat for a few minutes outside waiting for the right car to pass. Experimenting, finding value in the mundane, a slice of daily life.
Setting the table was something that my brother and I were always responsible for as kids. There was a proper way to do it, and we were taught and held to that standard. My kids now get to participate and make their Nana proud. :-)
A friend from the gym! I felt a connection with Jess from day one. This girl has a ton of ambition, determination and love of life/people. I had to ask for her portrait because it’s one I didn’t want to miss!
As we were driving to the mountains, we went through a tunnel we have passed through a million times. I always have loved the lines and light inside tunnels and finally had a chance to lift my camera since I wasn’t driving. This image turned out better than I had even expected, especially since the camera was not set with ideal settings.
Another good gym friend and her new baby. Sometimes motherhood requires that we must put our own desires aside for the needs our children. This was a beautiful example of selflessness.
This was a scene that I saw as I was driving from an appointment to work, and it caught my eye so much that I made a very quick turn to pull in and take the shot. Does it have any deep inspired meaning? No. It just struck me as a really interesting scene of the past, and memories of someone’s, sitting in a metal graveyard.
Self portrait during a session, when I was on a break, and admiring the beauty of my environment of mirrors and warm colors. Shot on my film camera.
I was driving home after a photo job, and the sky and mountains were absolutely beautiful. Like the tunnel, I have driven this route for years. I always notice it. I finally stopped to make it a forever memory.
My baby girl and I had a date in her stomping grounds. Breakfast at Ozo coffee, one of my favorite Colorado coffee shops. Boulder is her place, Ozo is my favorite, it was a moment I wanted to remember as she grows more and more independent and we see each other less. These are the moments I cherish.
There is something to me about seeing my man, being manly. ;-) He didn’t catch me taking the shot until a few moments after this. I love that he knows how to “do stuff” that I don’t. This is one of the many things I love about this man.
This may not look like anything more than a mess to the observer. To me, it’s a memory of fun…the joy of a 2 year old who was stoked on her first trike that was still too big for her, along side a snowboard from today’s world, that she has grown to love as a teenager and young adult.
Lastly, as you know I love the snow. It started falling this day as we were all at home together, a cozy weekend, and I stepped just outside my front door to make a memory of the beauty I saw in my neighborhood, in my world outside my door. I have seen this same scene for 22 years, and still find satisfaction, peace, and love within the walls of my home as well as the view that has been embedded in my mind.
I hope you enjoyed hearing my why for taking an image. There is usually a solid reason why I find something interesting to capture. It could be as simple as light, shadows, expressions, movement, static beauty, emotion and love….the list goes on. Photography for me is about feeling. It means something to me, beyond a pretty image.
What is your why? What compels you to snap the shutter. What drives you in this magical world??
Until next week…
