Motion picture film, my second try!
The cool thing about photographic film is that each stock has a distinctive look and feel to it. Some films can give a more expected look, but the ones that create a true vibe of their own are often times what film photographers are seeking!
Some film photographers will still edit photos, from a scan, just like they would a digital photo. There is nothing wrong with that method, it’s all a very personal choice! I choose to not edit my film photos, for about 99% of my collection. That being said, I will, if the white balance is so far off that the image is just plain ugly lol. I do mess with exposure IF it needs to be bumped up, but those are the few tweaks that I will make. As far as my film work, I choose not to edit beyond the scan, because part of the excitement of film for me is some of the odd nuances it can generate! For example, sometimes expired film will have a very muted or dull effect. I like that! If the color is a little weird, that can create a very unique look that I enjoy! A LOT!
Back to the motion picture film I used for this roll, a second try with this film! The film is called Cinestill 50D, which means it’s a 50 iso film and is designed to be used in brighter daylight. I had a snowy day to shoot on, and it WAS bright, so it was a good day to give it a go for a second time! The first time I shot this film, it was also a cold snowy day, however it was developed and scanned in a lab. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. Well being I have 2 more rolls in the fridge, I wanted to give it another chance since now I develop and scan my own work! This time, under the same shooting conditions, I felt way more successful and I look forward to the last roll sitting in my freezer!
Below is a selection of the images shot that day! I shot it at 25iso (if that is important information for you) and developed in C-41 chemistry! This set, I liked a LOT!!!
The first time I had the film developed, it came back with a color cast that I enjoyed, but wasn’t 100% in love with. It was enough different that I didn’t shoot the film again for over a year! I am really glad I pulled it out again and gave it a second try!
How is everyone holding up? My last blog was a few weeks ago, and I feel like we could be starting to get on the upside of things! We will see when we can return to our daily lives a little closer to normal, but not normal lol. Reach out if you want to chat!! About photography, or just to say hey and swap stories!!! I enjoy and encourage that!!
Until the next time…
<3 to you all!
